From an easy stroll to an adventurous mountain trail, the variety of hiking
options in Fernie and the surrounding Elk Valley is excellent. Here is a
sampling of several more rewarding hikes: 1 Fairy Creek Falls Trail, located
close to the Fernie Visitor Info-Centre, is a peaceful 35 minute walk on a gentle
grade through forests and meadows eventually culminating in a spectacular
view of the falls. 2 The Cedar Valley on
its way up to Island Lake offers hikers several excellent hiking options to
discover jagged peaks, ancient Cedar forests, and a pristine mountain lake.
Access to the lower trails can be found at Mount Fernie Provincial Park.
Trails further up the valley are located on private land. Permission to
access the trails can be obtained from Island Lake Lodge. 3 Elkford's Forests, Falls &
Lakes Trail
is perfectly suited for families. Excellent directional and
interpretive signs lead hikers through cool forests full of wildflowers,
along pretty lakes and to an impressive view of thundering Josephine Falls.
More information on this trail can be obtained from the Elkford Chamber of
Commerce . 4 Fernie Alpine Resort Trails
Although several trails exist at the base of the resort, a leisurely, 20
minute chair ride on the El Quad (4 person) chair lift will deliver you to
the high alpine offering unparalleled views over the Elk valley and great
hiking options. 5 The strenuous trail up Mount Hosmer is considered one of the areas most
challenging hikes. 6 Many routes can be discovered around the lake and
